Building Belief

Classical Roman Poet, Publius Vergilius Maro, better known as Virgil, wrote The Aeneid between 29 and 19 BC. This is considered one of the most important poems in literature. He also has made many quotations that have been incorporated into our pop culture over the past few millennia. These include, “Love conquers all,” and, “Fortune favors the bold.” It was another quote he made, though, that resonated with me and ultimately caused me to attempt to “reinvent” his genius.

In The Aeneid, Virgil writes, “They can because they think they can.” This is a very powerful quotation. If you consider what it takes to actually do something, isn’t thinking you can do it one of the first steps? The Little Engine That Could. “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” The simple belief that you can do or achieve something simply can net amazing results.

But what does it mean to believe? Is it telling yourself over and over again that you think you can do something? Or is it actually knowing you can do that thing? Belief has been defined as opinion lacking reference-able proof or knowing something to be true that cannot be proven. Doesn’t this apply to something that has not happened yet? Someone may think, “I know I will get that promotion.” Do they truly know they will get the promotion? Of course not! Well, unless they called a psychic hotline! They believe they will get the promotion.

So, how does belief turn into a reality? Sadly, it is not through magic. No, it is often through very hard work and perseverance. The belief that something is true, or will occur, though, provides the direction and motivation for all the blood, sweat and tears required to achieve the goal. When the going gets tough, it is one’s belief in their future success that pushes them forward.

Virgil’s quote, “They can because they think they can,” can easily be morphed into a belief statement. “I will get the promotion because I think I can get the promotion.” From the time that belief statement is crafted to the final outcome of the situation, you must always remind yourself of the statement. WRITE, don’t type, it on a piece of paper and tape it to your bathroom mirror, to the side of your compute monitor; anywhere you will see it and read it all the time. This not only builds your belief, but actually begins to “program” your subconscious mind to encourage your decision making process to support your belief.

Now, which belief statement is more powerful and builds more belief? “I will get the promotion to senior associate because I think I can get the promotion to senior associate,” or “I am a senior associate,”? Imagine yourself reading these, written on pieces of paper, throughout your day. Which one makes you truly and deeply believe you will be promoted? “I am a senior associate.” If you tell yourself you are what you want to be, or you have achieved what you want to achieve, “I climbed Mt. Everest,” you are MUCH more likely to be or achieve that goal.

“I will be rich.” This begins to program your subconscious mind to believe that, but it has questions. Oh, really? When? “I am rich.” There are no questions from your subconscious mind with this statement. There may be questions from your spouse or business partners, but YOU will have no doubt. Over time you will believe so deeply you are rich, through to your subconscious mind, that you will make the decisions rich people make. Smarter use of money, researching investments, etc. These decisions will, over time, cause you to truly become that which you have always believed yourself to be.

So, in writing “They can because they think they can,” Virgil built the foundation of the mindset of success. But to build on that foundation and develop truly successful thinking and belief habits, I would say, “They can because they know they can.”
